Joanne Hirtzel, Habiba Jelali, and Clara Lyonnais have been hired by Université Marie et Louis Pasteur (Besançon), while Jean-Clémet Ullès joins Université Bourgogne Europe (Dijon)
Former student of the University of Franche-Comté, Joanne Hirtzel defended her PhD thesis at the ThéMA research unit in February 2015. She has been Associate Professor in Geography and Planning at the University of Strasbourg, where she pursued her research at the LIVE research unit (UMR7362) for 10 years. She (re)joins the Geography Department of the SLHS faculty and reintegrates the ThéMA laboratory as a member of the Urbanisation, Networks and Mobility group. Her research focuses on mobility behaviors and their interaction with the environment. Initially centered on residential choices, her work has evolved toward analyzing cycling practices in urban areas, with a specific interest in users' perceptions within Strasbourg's cycling network. She relies on participatory approaches to place user experiential knowledge at the heart of her spatial diagnosis, co-constructing her research alongside local stakeholders (associations and local authorities).
Habiba JELALI is a Senior Lecturer in Applied Foreign Languages (LEA) at Université Marie et Louis Pasteur and a member of the THéMA research lab. She holds a PhD in English Studies and specialises in contemporary British studies. Her research focuses primarily on urban transformations in the United Kingdom, particularly the link between urban policies and the process of gentrification. Her doctoral thesis examines the London neighbourhood of Peckham and is entitled: The Neighbourhood of Peckham, Southwark : a Study of the Process of Gentrification between 1997 and 2022. Her research explores how urban regeneration policies have a deep impact on neighbourhoods, residents, their practices, and their identities.
Clara Lyonnais Voutaz studies human-animal relationships in French cities. During her PhD thesis in Geography and Planning, titled "Anim(alis)er la ville pour l'écologiser ? Géographies des politiques, des récits et du travail avec les poules et les chevaux en France", she investigated the return of production animals in cities, through the lens of composting hens and territorial horses. After her PhD at Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3 in the Environnement, Ville, Société laboratory, Clara Lyonnais Voutaz has been a temporary lecturer and researcher at Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour. With an agregation degree in Geography, she mostly teaches in the professional training program for future teachers in geography and history, preparing them for hiring competitions (CAPES, agregation).
After completing a PhD in Geography and Spatial Planning at the Laboratory of Geography and Planning of Montpellier (LAGAM) and spending a year as a temporary lecturer and researcher at University of Montpellier Paul Valéry, Jean-Clément Ullès joins the ThéMA laboratory and University of Burgundy Europe as an Associate Professor of Geography. His research focuses on alternatives to private car use in urban and peri-urban areas. By analysing travel demand, daily rhythms, and intermodal and multimodal transport supply, he investigates the barriers to and drivers of the transition towards more sustainable mobility. His work focuses in particular on the quantitative assessment of multimodal accessibility and spatial inequalities in access to opportunities.
