ATER in Geography (CNU 23) at Marie and Louis Pasteur University (UMLP). My research focuses on gambling venues in Paris and Dakar. I am particularly interested in the urban traces of gambling, as well as the spatial strategies implemented by gambling stakeholders (operators, regulators, etc.).
In a global context of normalization of gambling and liberalization of their practice with the development of new communications technologies, gambling is becoming a new social and spatial issue (Järvinen-Tassopoulos, 2010). This research will deal with gambling practices in urban spaces in Paris (France) and Dakar (Senegal) where the gambling industry is developing and is strongly engraved in “urban landscapes and practices” (Fall et al., 2019). It will focus on gamblers in general, in being attentive to the trajectories that bring gambler onto the gambling field and by taking a particular look at young populations who are developing new ways of gamble in relation to new communication technologies. The comparison between the Parisian and Dakar conurbations will make it possible to articulate dynamics of urbanization and inclusion of gambling and gambling spaces in different urban landscapes, by emphasizing common processes, differences and circulations, while compare South/North perspectives. It’s about questioning common dynamics, resulting from globalized processes, but also the specificity of the links between urbanization, youthful populations, and the development of gambling on a local scale.
